Open Mic Pitch Night

Open Mic Pitch Night

Open Mic Pitch Night

Do you have a story to tell, a product to launch, funds to raise or a cause to create awareness of?

On the 3rd Friday of each month, we open the doors and the stage to local entrepreneurs to give their pitch, and invite the community to come and listen. Whether you are an entrepreneur, an investor, a business enthusiast, a corporate employee or anyone in between, you are welcome to join us as part of the audience to hear the pitches.

Want to pitch?

We have 6x 5-minute spots available each month.

Three spots are available to be pre-booked by Members, so you can be guaranteed time with the microphone.

Another three spots are available on the night, for anyone who wants to speak. These are on a first come, first served basis…so get there early (sign up sheet will be available from 4:30pm)

Pitches will start at 5pm and conclude by 6pm, with a short intermission.

There is no judging, no criteria and no rules (other than common courtesy of course).

Time for a few questions will follow each pitch.

Slides are optional, we recommend creating slides in 16:9 format to best suit the screen.

For the pitchers and the audience, we’ll provide a drink & some snacks to help you relax.

We will probably go out for dinner somewhere nearby afterward, you are welcome to join if you are available (dinner is not included in your ticket price)

Canvas Open Playing Rules
These are the official playing rules of the Canvas Open, as sanctioned by the International Committee of Competition Table Tennis for Amatures in Coworking Spaces (ICCTTACS).

Location:
All games will be played at the Canvas Coworking Space, using the table, paddles and balls provided.

Serve:
The ball must rest on an open hand palm. Then it must be tossed up at least 6 inches and struck so the ball first
bounced on the servers side and then the opponent’s side.

Playing:
After the serve, the opponent must then return the serve by directly hitting the ball over the net and into the
servers court.

Play continues with each player hitting the ball directly back over the net until a point is scored.
If the ball hits the net and goes ‘in’ – its play on.
Each player serves two points in a row and then the serve is switched.
If a score of 10-10 is reached in any game, then each server serves only one point, and then the serve is switched.

Swapping Ends:
After each game, the players swap ends.
In the final game (ie 3rd game), the players swap ends again after either player reaches 5 points.

Game:
The game is won by the first player who reaches 11 points, unless both players are on 10 points, in which case the
winner will be the first player to be 2 points in front (Ie 10-12, or 15-13).

Match:
The match will consist of 3 games. The Winner is the player who wins two games.

Playing times:
All rounds needs to be played during the “round week”.
Playing times need to be negotiated between the players, except for the semi final and final, which will be played
on the Finals night.

The court must be booked for competition matches with the playing times listed on the whiteboard.
If a suitable playing time can’t be negotiated, the player with the least flexible schedule is deemed the looser.
Where both players are equally unflexible, it will be decided by a coin toss.

Other:
Please update the draw at the end of each game, and remember to check the draw for your next round/opponent
Whilst this is a deadly serious competition, please remember to have fun and play in the spirit of the Coworking
Space.

Spelling and/or grammar mistakes in the rules, does not make the rule invalid.

***The focus of this Startup Weekend is Sustainability***

So Why Sustainability?
Sustainability is the main challenge of our times: our humanity needs concrete solutions for the future
We believe that by supporting entrepreneurship we can sow the seeds for the future; and by encouraging local initiatives, have a huge global impact
By launching Startup Weekends on Sustainability, we gather communities of participants, entrepreneurs and committed mentors, and thus engage people on positive impact projects
Our goal is to encourage and inspire more sustainability in the world and to connect more innovators to the vast number of resources and mentors available in our startup community. That’s why we want you to be part of this weekend and join some of the most passionate, talented and entrepreneurial-minded people across our community!

Everyone is welcome to join in. Together we can make a real difference

What happens at a Startup Weekend?

Let’s start with Friday and a night of networking, pitches and team building. Then the energy really ramps up on Saturday as we continue the brainstorming, business plan development, and basic prototype creation. To enhance your team we have also curated a rockstar team of mentors to coach and support you on the adventure. Sunday brings the culmination of all your hard work and energy as the projects come to life and are presented to the live judging panel, plus we’ll finish off with a celebratory party.

What do you need to bring?

Lots of energy! You’ll pitch your own idea or listen to others, then vote on the most interesting ideas and form teams with diverse skill sets. You can come with friends, but you’ll get the full experience if you participate in separate teams. Remember, it’s all about the team.
Your idea should be something you have not previously worked on. The idea you pitch and the problem you set out to solve can span social, educational, financial, environmental, or other issues. Over the course of the weekend you’ll be challenged to create a prototype of your MVP, or minimum viable product, that fits the needs of your target customer. You’ll get feedback, iterate, and likely pivot your approach entirely! Important: You cannot have worked previously on your idea.

Startup Weekend Toowoomba is a full weekend-long experience. Your ticket includes:

7 full (and delicious) meals over the course of the weekend
Benefits and discounts from our global partners
One-on-one time with amazing mentors
A new network of developers, designers, and entrepreneurs eager, like you, to change the world.
All the internet and coffee you can consume.
