Food Labelling Basics - Where to START?

Food Labelling Basics

Lunch & Learn
08 October 2021 | 12pm – 1pm

Food labeling tells consumers about the ingredients and nutritional composition of packaged food for sale.

Food labeling is required for most prepared foods, such as bread, cereals, canned and frozen foods, snacks, desserts, drinks, etc. Nutrition labeling for raw produce (fruits and vegetables) and fish is voluntary.

Did you know when it comes to preparing food labels, there are generally three governing regulation systems to comply with? To comply with the Australian Consumer Law, a food producer needs to ensure that all statements and images comply with the requirement that prohibits false, misleading, and deceptive representations. The Australian Food Standards code sets out the labelling requirements of all food products sold in Australia & New Zealand. Many foods sold in Australia will also need to comply with net content declaration requirements as regulated by the National Measurement Institute.

Our presenter, Stewart Eddie of Ask a Food Tech knows that as a food producer it can be daunting knowing where to start.  This week’s Lunch & Learn session is designed to introduce / reacquaint you with the basic requirements for food labelling of retail packaging and the basic labelling requirements for food service establishments will help you understand and start food labelling on your own!

This session is also a great introduction to the topic, if you are a food re-seller, manufacturer or consumer. Making a label is one step, reading it and understanding it is also a skill to learn!
